ARTIST STATEMENT

This painting is a self portrait, conveying the experience of being an unprotected young woman in the world. It is a reaction to the artist’s experience of being sexualized and preyed upon in grief, and having her grief reinterpreted, repackaged, and monetised by someone else.

The subject stands behind a market display of fish packed in ice, beautiful, glistening, and staring with dead eyes. Her arms are outstretched as a purveyor, but also carry a challenging defiance, evoking both vulnerability and self sacrifice. The work draws a clear parallel between the dehumanisation of female beauty and the double meaning of predator and prey. On close inspection, the subject herself is flayed like the shining fish stacked before her.
