This painting and others in the series are based in a view of history in Fellini’s movie Satyricon, which starts with figures in a fresco that come alive, live out their story and re-enter the fresco at the end of the film, once again becoming still images but now containing the narrative of their time. This painting and others in the series consists of black and white portraits of anonymous friends and acquaintances who, in being painted, become part of Canadian art history in the manner of the figures in Fellini’s movie.
