ARTIST STATEMENT
I find that the human form: portraiture and especially the human face, the quintessential subject for an artist. I love the challenge of rendering a good likeness, of capturing the essence of the sitter, in an original, focused and unobstructed manner. At the same time, I want to explore new ways for me to express myself in the portrait by exploiting the versatility of the medium I am using. In the end, I consider a portrait a success when it not only reveals who the sitter is, but also reveals something about me, the artist.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
I was born in 1962 in Moncton, but grew up in Ottawa where I now live. Although I had a successful career in the civil service, I have always found time to pursue art as a serious hobby. I’ve never found art easy. I struggle with it on so many levels. But when, after hours, or days if not months of work, a piece emerges that humbles me, I feel that the sacrifice and emotional sweat were well spent. My main means of expression is oils on canvas and boards, and drawing with graphite and pen. My preferred subjects are the human body and still-lifes. All of my works focus on rendering the subject as faithfully as I see it and exploiting the expressive potential of the medium whether oils, graphite or ink. Being a minimalist, I prefer simple compositions where the subject of the painting or drawing is unencumbered, allowing me to undertake a more focused study of the subject.
