Artist Statement

This is an image of my son and a self-portrait of sorts if you agree that the choices of an individual are often autobiographical. As a painting it is a portrait of white privilege, his and mine.

In this painting the figure sits awkwardly in the seat, reflecting this contemporary moment where the old stereotypes and narratives of dominance and privilege no longer fit comfortably. He sits centrally, a focal point, out of context from a larger group and conversation in the room.

I have always been interested in the body as a subject although representational painting can be difficult territory to navigate given the complex histories and loaded meaning associated with the figure. I am intrigued by my relationship to this complex milieu and the way the body has functioned and been assigned meaning throughout time. Through my work I attempt to navigate a path through this space.
