The enduring appeal of capturing a human likeness in paint is testament to its unique expression of humanity. The ability to view a subject through the eye of the painter adds significantly to the lure of our imagination.
The portrait tradition is a long one full of wonderful and inspiring masters in the technique. Being profoundly moved by the virtuosity and beauty found in portraits by these great mentors, I have endeavoured to gain some knowledge of traditional techniques through atelier-style studies. Using these skills, I hope to pay homage to the beauty of nature and the human form.
It was a privilege to have the opportunity to paint Dr. Summerlee, president of the University of Guelph. Despite the many demands on his time, he was willing to sit for me and passed the time listening to a favourite opera, one of his many passions, while following the musical score (and monitoring his inbox from time to time). The somewhat busy composition is an allusion to his multi-faceted role as academic, scientist, administrator, visionary and communicator. His exceptional energy and warmth made the experience a very pleasurable one.
