ARTIST STATEMENT
Transcendence is a symbolic portrait that engages with the concept of neurodivergence through metaphor and visual allegory. The work critically examines societal norms surrounding cognitive and behavioral “normalcy,” inviting viewers to reconsider ingrained perceptions and biases.
Formally inspired by Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus, the central figure is positioned before a feast which is emblematic of societal abundance and normative inclusion. However, the figure’s visibly distressed expression contrasts dramatically with the opulence of the setting, articulating the internal disharmony of neurodivergent people, who frequently experience alienation from conventional norms. The figure’s clothing, evocative of Christ at the resurrection feast, represents the resilience and fortitude of neurodivergent individuals in a society that often fails to comprehend them. The viewer, cast in a voyeuristic role, is confronted by the subject’s discomfort, which inspires empathy. Fruit in the scene alludes to the phrase “like comparing apples to oranges,” a reminder that neurodivergent individuals exhibit distinct talents and challenges that merit appreciation rather than comparison to neurotypical standards.
Ultimately, Transcendence is a call for greater acceptance of neurodivergence. It reminds us that the world is made richer by diversity and that resilience, though born from struggle, can also be a source of transformative strength. By embracing the full spectrum of human experience, we can build a society where every individual, regardless of their neurotype, can enjoy a seat at the table.

Hannah White is an artist from Whitby, ON. She recently graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from Queen’s University in 2025 where she specialized in realistic painting. Her works are often fuelled by a deep fascination with human emotion and psychology. Transcendence is a self-portrait that merges the artist’s lived experiences with a cause that is very close to heart.
