ARTIST STATEMENT
Quiet Reflection is a self-portrait exploring introspection, stillness, and the inner world that exists beneath outward appearances. As someone who often becomes absorbed in my thoughts, I wanted to capture the reserved and contemplative side of my personality. My calm expression, joined hands, and relaxed posture suggest a moment of pause, while the surrounding landscape creates a quiet and reflective atmosphere. The cool tones reinforce the feeling of solitude and contemplation. Through this self-portrait, I explore how portraiture can communicate more than physical appearance. The painting reflects the contrast between a quiet exterior and an active inner world of thoughts, goals, and future possibilities.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Gracien Amisi is a Canadian visual artist whose practice focuses primarily on oil painting and portraiture, alongside drawing, photography, and multimedia work. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from the University of Ottawa. His work explores portraiture as a way of examining identity, memory, presence, and the relationship between individuals and their environments. Working primarily in oil, Amisi combines photographic references with close observation, paying particular attention to light, colour, tonal contrast, composition, and facial expression. He believes that every face carries a unique story, memory, and essence, and through his work, he aims to capture emotions, connections, and meaningful moments. In 2026, Amisi painted the winner of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, a Miami Heat player, and the artwork was published by the Miami Heat organization. His work has also been exhibited at Galerie 115 at the University of Ottawa.
