ARTIST STATEMENT
A Ride Through Memory Lane is a portrait of my father, Yang Wang, taken during a family trip to Disneyland in 2011. My relationship with my father is, like many relationships with first-generation immigrant parents, complex and marked by communication challenges and cultural clashes. Our conversations often feel like arguments. I sometimes imagine the two of us as monkeys frantically running around—and away from—the ideas of intimacy and accountability, caught between cultural truths and spiritual ones.
At the same time, because neither of us is willing to compromise on our understanding of how we objectively behave or who we are as individuals and as family, we preserve a certain detached purity in the ways we see ourselves and each other. Our intimacy lies in the silences between us and in our hard-won disagreements.
When I moved away from home a few years ago, I noticed that distance sometimes makes me feel closer to my dad. When I look at this portrait, I think about change, time, and the rare opportunity to know another person in a particular way.
The frame is a simple one purchased from IKEA. It situates the work within the tradition of spontaneous home photography, where compositional imperfections often capture the fleeting and impermanent nature of life with the greatest authenticity. Yet, more than documenting a moment on a Disneyland ride, this picture represents the vibrant presence of life and love that exists both because of and in spite of everything.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Georgia Wang is a classical pianist, visual artist, and poet with a longstanding interest in mental health, spirituality, and the human condition. Exposure to the work of pianist Marek Jablonski, painter Tom Thomson, composer Franz Schubert, and many others has profoundly shaped her artistic sensibilities. Her poetry collection, Going and Being, was published in 2021, and her recent piano performances include recitals in Xiamen and Shanghai in June 2025.
Since graduating from Rutgers University (B.M. in Piano Performance) and The Glenn Gould School (A.D.P. in Piano Performance) in May 2025, Georgia has devoted more time to creating visual art, using it to find direction, make sense of experience, discover color, and cultivate a sense of belonging and acceptance in her life beyond school. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Eaton Centre (March–July 2026), the Toronto Public Library’s Leaside Branch (June 2026), and the VVAF Art Downtown exhibition (summer 2023). Georgia strives to present visual art, poetry, and music in ways that are accessible and meaningful to both longtime enthusiasts and curious newcomers.
