For the longest time I hesitated to paint Rob’s spots. Should a portrait flatter the sitter? Should a portrait enhance the sitter for the viewer? Should a portrait reflect the sitter’s standing in society? Should a portrait be an artist’s interpretation of the sitter’s state of mind? Should a portrait be about the truth? For the longest time I hesitated to paint Rob’s spots. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
