Artist Statement
While capturing a likeness is an essential and sometimes challenging aspect of portraiture, I find myself equally concerned with portraying personality, mood and spirit. For me, a successful portrait conveys the emotional and psychological state of the subject, and engages the viewer on this level.
In the painting Ad Lucem (Into the Light), the difference in posture and expression of the two subjects is a crucial aspect of the image and adds emotional depth and tension to the painting. The strong contrast of light and shadow is used to emphasize the mood and to evoke the gesture of emergence suggested by the title.
Biography
Although I graduated with a BFA from the University of Victoria, I am a self taught painter interested in using classical painting techniques in a contemporary context. The painting, Ad Lucem, is the most recent in the ongoing series Outlaws, which is an exploration of the politics of representation as informed by social norms and expectations.
