ARTIST STATEMENT
This painting was made through several sittings and visits between the artist and the subject in the subject’s home. The painting began as a portrait of a quiet contemplative moment, but grew to be about the extreme heat in Toronto this summer and the intense light that shined into the room as a result. When the weather is just too hot and the air conditioning provides no relief, the only thing that can be done is sitting still and trying to find inner peace.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Caroline Ji is an artist based in Toronto, Canada. Her current body of work explores themes of self-perception, emotional intimacy, and how human beings relate to objects, spaces, and each other. She paints the people around her, and she is interested in portraying human experiences using strong lighting and colours to elicit strong emotions. Her paintings are collected across Canada, USA, Asia and Europe. She has exhibited in Canada, USA, and Australia.
