Artist Statement

“Sarah – After the Swim”

For the last four years I have been concentrating solely on portraiture and enjoying it immensely. Sarah is one of my favourite models to paint. I have known her for many years and love her impish grin. She is here posing with the autumnal backdrop of the northern coast of Cape Breton in the late afternoon. My goal was to use the intense colours and contrasts of the landscape surrounding her to emphasize the passionate and spirited person that she is. Having just emerged from the sea triumphant after a swim, she is wearing that impish grin. This truly Canadian, and exceptionally clear and cloudless sunny day belies the cold temperatures of the waters and therefore the true achievement of that swim.

Biography/CV

I was born in England and lived some time in Italy before coming to Canada. I spent much of my time drawing, painting and creating things as a young girl, heavily influenced by the intensely colourful Mediterranean surroundings. I thoroughly enjoy the creation and manipulation of colours, the subtly of shapes, and varieties of textures in painting and hopefully, faithfully rendering in a hyperrealistic style, the subject while emphasizing details in and around them.
