Artist Statement

This is a portrait of my mother at 105 years old who has many hours in the day for quiet contemplation. I have tried to capture, a certain wisdom, a certain sadness, and a certain resignation that she feels as she reflects on her life. Her life was one of adventure, of happiness, and more recently of loss, a loss of memories, friends and family. When working on a portrait, I am most interested in capturing the essence of the person, but for this portrait it was equally important to capture her likeness. As always with art, and for me, with drawing in particular, the more you look, the more you see.

Biography

I have always been interested in drawing the human figure. While working I would take night classes in life drawing and dream of the day, that I would be able to go to art school full time. I finally realized that dream and graduated from the adult program at Central Technical School a few years ago. When I completed the program I was motivated to continue drawing and painting on a regular basis. It’s a wonderful world, with so much to discover. I feel tremendously fortunate to have the time to step back and look, and then look again, because we never see the first time, or the second, or the third…what is really there.
