ARTIST STATEMENT
The self-portrait becomes a vessel for lived experience, carrying memories, emotions, and cultural histories across places. Draped in my mother’s saree, my blurred figure inhabits the space between homeland and the present. Inspired by the hashiya, an ornamental line drawing framing the main image of Mughal miniature painting, the border becomes a threshold between worlds. Gold line drawings of local flora and fauna which is entering the frame, weaving the fleeting Canadian landscape into the portrait. Their delicate presence reflects the fragility and preciousness of entangled lives by connecting nature, memory, migration, and belonging.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Anindita Chakraborty is a visual artist and educator from Tripura, India, now based in Montreal, Canada. Her practice explores migration, memory, identity, belonging, biophilia, and human connection with nature through painting, self-portraiture, textiles, performative photography, and natural materials. Her primary concept is her lived experiences with cultural memory and landscapes. In this portrait, her mother’s saree, the hashiya of Mughal miniature painting, and transient Canadian foliage come together, holding a quiet space between memory, place, and belonging. The active, place-based growth of the living flora and fauna creates a porous threshold, allowing two states to meet and coexist.
