Artist Statement

This is a portrait of my daughter, Emily. I have tried to create a simple, timeless image, employing the traditional technique of egg tempera and using genuine lapis lazuli for the background. Emily has struck a classical pose while dressed in the most contemporary of clothing items – two simple cotton t-shirts: one on her body, and one on her head.

Biography

Leslie Watts’s portraits in egg tempera have been exhibited twice in the Kingston Prize and three times in the BP Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, UK. As a commissioned portrait artist, she recently painted the Honourable Chrystia Freeland for Rhodes House, Oxford, UK; and Roy Romanow, Chancellor of The University of Saskatchewan.
